Dear Yuletide Writer,
Hi! I'm pretty excited for Yuletide this year. I have a number of prompts for each fandom, but please see them as optional and do what you like :) I'll be excited to see what you come up with.
Shipping thoughts: A lot of my requests will be shippy. But if I mention liking a character combination as a ship, I'll probably be interested in gen for those characters as well. I'm also a huge multishipper, so if I haven't DNW'ed a ship, I'm probably okay with it. I ship femslash, het, slash, poly, whatever. If I'm requesting an alternate ship for a person who is with someone else in canon, I'd be fine with 1) an amicable break up, 2) an AU where they're not together, or 3) an open relationship. Additionally, I quite like dark fic, so unless I say I prefer a ship to be sunshine and flowers, feel free to go with a dark take on it if you wish.

This fandom hit me over the head with feels this summer. I haven't quite finished watching the show yet but I have only about five episodes left to go so don't worry about spoilers as I'm sure I'll be done by Christmas. (Edit: Have now finished, thought it was very good, feelings on characters/prompts remain unchanged.) Anyways. The angst! The identity porn! All the complex intertwined relationships! The politics and scheming! The martial arts! It's a fun show :) I mentioned a lot of relationships above because I'm a huge multishipper for this show and I like gen for it a lot too, so I'm relatively easy to please.
Some ideas:
-Anything related to Mei Changsu's multiple identities is catnip to me. People finding out in different ways from how they find out in canon, people's reactions to finding out. Or situations where people don't find out but come within an inch, or Mei Changsu is having some Feelings but can't show them because he has an identity to protect. I also love Mei Changsu's "mysterious jianghu sect leader" persona, and would love to see more of his "Mei Changsu" side--stories of those twelve years we don't see in canon, people who know him primarily through his Mei Changsu persona, or a character who canonically meets him as "Su Zhe" meeting him as "Mei Changsu" instead (I feel like those two personas are slightly different, you know). On the other hand, the "Su Zhe" persona is also really fun--does Mei Changsu ever get annoyed at downgrading (at least in public) from Jiangzuo Alliance leader to quiet philosopher? Which persona comes closest to how he actually thinks of himself?
-Prince Yu dying made me very sad, so I'd love to see something where he survives. Maybe Mei Changsu somehow gets him out of jail in some Faustian bargain, or Yu decides not to pull the Spring Hunt rebellion and comes up with some subtler plan instead. Maybe Yu actually wins at the Spring Hunt! I realize that would be very bad for the Empire and basically every other character but I'd still love to see how that would work out. Alternatively, something set during the period where Yu is still in grace. I'd love to see something about his weird relationship with MCS (maaaaybe something shippy??) or his even weirder relationships with his family members. How did the Empress feel when the Emperor first gave Yu to her to be her son? How has her mothering him made him the man he is now--or is he more like his biological mother, Princess Linglong? Anything about Yu's connection to the Hua would also be great. Or maybe a fic about him and Banruo? Idk I just love this villainous boy.
-Nihuang is my girl :) I love her being a warrior and a leader and the (temporary) head of her family, and I also love her softer side that she shows around Mei Changsu. If you ship MCS/Nihuang, I'd be interested in seeing how things would work out if they were known to be in a relationship by the capital, but most people still didn't know MCS was Lin Shu. What would people think of Nihuang being with a non-noble, with a man who's weaker than she is, with a man who's so mysterious and (from some points of view) manipulative? AU where MCS comes to Jinling as Nihuang's mysterious boyfriend/fiance/kept man. Or, how would things work out if Nihuang knew MCS for a while longer before guessing his identity? On the other hand, I also ship Nihuang with Xia Dong. What were those two up to in the twelve years we don't see? When did they meet--before or after Meiling? I'd like to see them dealing with grieving for their own losses while sort of hating each other--Xia Dong hating Nihuang for mourning a man who betrayed her husband, and Nihuang hating Xia Dong for believing the worst of the Chiyan Army. How did they ever sort that tangle out?
-As for Yujin, I love that he seems frivolous, and he does like music and pretty girls and partying, but he's also very clever. He's able to handle very tense social situations, even ones with high stakes, and when he eventually joins Team MCS he's very capable of carrying out Mei Changsu's instructions in political scheming. The boy takes after his father the diplomat, I suppose. So... seeing him involved in a political scheme or a tricky situation would be fun. Alternatively, something exploring his relationship with his father. They've been somewhat distant for nearly all his life, but Yan Que clearly does care about him. So, any fic dealing with that would be great. I also lowkey ship him with MCS, partly because I think they're somewhat similar people but Yujin hasn't had to go through everything MCS has been through, and partly because MCS clearly does like Yujin even if he knows Yujin isn't quite on his level. So shippy fic for them would be lovely. MCS plays the flute and Yujin loves music--has MCS ever played for him? If MCS lived, how would their relationship develop post-canon?

This fandom gave me so many feelings, largely of the "gangsters but also they are family but also they are fated enemies but also they are family" variety, with a little "damn Zan is hot and good at what she does" on the side. To that end, I would love a fic involving either both Kai Jin and Uncle Six, or Zan with either of the two, or Zan off doing her own thing or having relationships with other people. You do not need to include all three characters, but if you do, I'd probably like that too! Also, I honestly did not follow the worldbuilding aspects of this canon very well but if you want to fuck around with what it means to be a Wu Assassin or a Wu Warlord, I'd be really interested to see what you'd do with that. (How on Earth did Six even learn all his Wu stuff if he didn't have a Ying Ying, for example?)

I'd love a fic about any point in their past: Kai Jin when Uncle Six first took him in, Kai Jin realizing what Six does for a living, Kai Jin moving out, various times Six interfered with his life as an adult and Kai Jin growing more hostile, maybe an incident where someone tried to use Kai Jin against Six and that did not turn out well for them. Maybe an outsider's perspective on any of these stages?
-Fic from the AU where Uncle Six lived :,(. Does Kai Jin make up with him? I mean, Six might have given up his fire powers, but he'd still be a gang boss and a murderer. Would it be possible for him, possibly with Kai Jin's support, to take back Chinatown from Zan? Or would he retire--or briefly try to retire, with Kai Jin's encouragement, and somehow end up back in the business anyway?
-Zan/Kai Jin strikes me as a fun crack ship. Six took Kai Jin in as a son, and took Zan in as an underling, two very different dynamics. So how would this relationship work? Would Zan be attracted to Kai Jin in a "he's my boss's son and I idolize my boss" kind of way, and then maybe get annoyed when she realized Kai Jin actually doesn't get along with Six at all? What if Six tried to set Kai Jin up with Six bc of Reasons? What if Zan kind of hates Kai Jin for leaving the business but likes to drop by the restaurant and hit on him bc she still has an old crush and then things develop? What if Kai Jin had a conflicted attraction towards Zan bc he likes strong women but also she's a gangster and he doesn't want any part of that life? What if in a no-powers AU, Zan kidnapped Kai Jin in a gambit against Six but then she had feelings? What if Zan was one of the Wu Warlords and Kai Jin and she were archnemeses after he had already taken down all the other Wu Warlords? What if.
-Even crackier ship: Zan/Ying Ying. What if Zan were the Wu Assassin? She's down to kill people, so that's really no issue, but how would Ying Ying keep her from going power mad? Would Zan be able to take down the Wu Warlords? (For this specific AU, you can kill off Uncle Six if you want.) Would Ying Ying and Zan get any training done with the mad sexual tension in the way?
-Zan/Jenny, on the other hand, is like. Two inches away from canon, so. I would love to see Zan and Jenny hate-making out. Or? Having a real relationship? Or hate making out and then having a real relationship? Or hating on each other and wanting to make out but never getting around to it bc Fighting is their relationship? Zan being condescending, like, "You've never had it as tough as me." Fuckign kung fu and wrestling. Jenny passive aggressively making Zan food and Zan eating it in the most provocative manner possible while Kai Jin and/or Tommy watches uncomfortably. Yes.

These two characters are so fun! I love the contrast between Hal the inscrutable and Hotspur the very very scrutable. Hal, two-faced and crafty, and Hotspur, who can't hold a scheme together AT ALL but can still beat anyone in a fair fight... or so he thinks, but it turns out Hal can beat him at that too! I love how they casually insult each other when the other isn't around, but when they meet in battle, Hal actually has a lot of respect for Hotspur, and in the end Hotspur is forced to admit Hal's worth. THAT SAID. I am fine with this happening in an AU (as long as it's similar to the canon setting), pre-canon, post-canon in an AU where Hotspur is alive... just, you know, I like these two.

-For some reason I feel like this ship (or non-ship) would be fun with magical stuff going on. Hotspur and Hal are soulmates or accidentally form a soulbond where they can't be more than a mile away from each other, ever! Glendower gets pissed, turns out to have magical powers, and turns Hotspur into a dog--who somehow ends up being adopted by Hal! Hal and/or Hotspur time travel and prevent the revolt from happening or otherwise try to mess with the timeline! Just, weird magic!
-Henry IV trying to use Hotspur to Reform Hal's Ways. Hal gets sent to stay at Hotspur's manor, or Hotspur is assigned as Hal's... manservant or something... obviously neither of them are happy about this! Is Hotspur successful in reforming Hal? Is Hal successful at corrupting Hotspur? Does it turn out that Hal really didn't need to be reformed in the first place and Hotspur becomes his biggest defender? Hmmmm (also just in general, Henry preferring Hotspur to Hal is a vibe.)
-Hotspur somehow survives the ending of the play. Is he in prison? On the run as an outlaw? Tentatively accepted back to court bc he somehow made up for his misdeeds? More importantly. How does he feel about Hal now that Hal has beaten him? Reluctant respect or incandescent fury at this dude who dared to defeat him despite being a lazy drunkard? Does he want a rematch, or is he now loyal to Hal? If he's in prison, does Hal visit him? If he's on the run as an outlaw, is Hal chasing him? If he's back in court, just how awkward are things with Henry IV these days?

So, The Prisoner of Zenda is one of my favorite novels. ...but I have to admit I've never actually read Rupert of Hentzau bc I read like three pages and got too depressed over Flavia's depressing marriage and gave up. So, I'd prefer if you stuck to the canon of the first novel if possible? Anyways I love the secret identity stuff and the pining and the politics and the swordsfighting and the kingnapping and just everything so. But I especially love these four characters! I don't need all four by any means, but I'd like at least two of them if possible. Shippy fic and gen are both fine.
Some ideas:
-I've written a lot of Rupert/Rassendyll prompts in the past, so feel free to reference those if you want. In general, with Rupert/Rassendyll I love the vibe of them both being tricksters but with Rupert being chaotic evil while Rassendyll is generally chaotic good. I love Rupert nicknaming Rassendyll "play actor", and I love how Rassendyll fuckign hates Rupert, like, even more than he hates Black Michael. Just straight up hates him. The canonical stabbing. Rupert's kind of sadistic side. Rupert wanting Rassendyll to join him in his evil schemes bc he thinks they're more alike than they really are. What if Rassendyll and co managed to capture Rupert, or Rupert managed to capture Rassendyll? What if Rassendyll actually did go along with Rupert's evil plans--how would that weigh on him as a person? I also vaguely feel this would be a fun ship for weird hurt/comfort or forced proximity. Just go wild.
-Fritz, Fritz, Fritz... I just love the boy, he's so debonair. He's like... you get the sense that he's kind of "why the fuck did I get pulled into this" but also one hundred percent down. I love him liking Rassendyll more than he likes the king, and the friendship that forms between them. I would be really interested to see how Rupert/Fritz would work, also--I mean Fritz definitely knows Rupert is one of those evil guys on Michael's side, so how would Rupert charm him regardless? Or maybe they would have more of an antagonistic relationship.
-As for Flavia, I'm actually a huge sap for the canonical Flavia/Rassendyll ship. How could things work out a bit better for them? Would the king have to die, or is there some AU out there where he could live and Flavia would still end up with Rassendyll anyway? What about an AU where Rassendyll comes to Ruritania as a diplomat after all (assume the events of the novel didn't happen or fell out differently) and meets Flavia that way? For that matter, that kind of AU would be a lot of fun for any ship or even as gen... Like, how would the court deal with their king's weird lookalike? But back to Flavia, I'm also interested in how she feels after learning Rassendyll is Rassendyll, not her original Rudolf. Or, fic where Flavia is the next in line for the throne rather than Rudolf--how would that influence the political situation?
